A STORY OF SELF LEADERSHIP

1996
My story starts when I was a teenager
I was hanging out with the wrong crowd, dabbling in drugs, smoking cigarettes heavily, and using food as a way to escape from life. I was more than 100 pounds overweight, failing classes, and driving a piece-of-crap car. In short, my self-worth was nonexistent. One day my dad found me depressed in my room and said, ‘You have two choices. You can accept where you are or you can change.’ That was the day I told myself ‘Screw it. No more.’ And I decided to change.

One year later I was a hundred pounds lighter
Physically, mentally, and emotionally. I had shed everything that wasn’t serving me, and I was no longer letting other people dictate who I should be. It was only a couple of years later when I got my first taste of business. I flipped a car with a friend and doubled my initial $500 investment. That was such a powerful lesson for me that within six months I made another $40,000 using the same strategy. I was hooked on business, so right out of college I got a great job. It wasn’t long, however, before I realized my relentless drive to create the biggest life possible would not happen if I was employed by someone else.

Real estate piqued my interest when I took that $40,000 from car flipping and invested it in a condo
I had to sell unexpectedly, and it was just enough of a taste of real estate to realize that it was a good match for my relentless drive. So in 2006, my then-girlfriend, and now beautiful wife, Sarah Ostiguy Hergenrother, and I started the Hergenrother-Ostiguy Group. Our slogan was, ‘Hard to pronounce, but easy to work with!’ Those days were awesome. We borrowed $8,000 to start our business and in the first 30 days spent half of it going to an industry conference. It was the first time I learned that investing in yourself and your own education would provide the biggest return.

I then met Gary Keller at a private event in Austin
After about five minutes of listening to him speak, I was sold. I immediately came back to Vermont and opened a Keller Williams Realty Market Center. It would prove to be much more challenging than I thought, but I had chosen to step off the sidelines and into the arena, and it was time to fight for the vision I had.

Founded Keller Williams Vermont
Two years into building The Adam Hergenrother Team, I also wanted to grow and open my own brokerage where my focus on personal growth could be utilized fully. I founded KW Vermont, and it was the fastest market center to ever open within Keller Williams in New England. Now KW Vermont has over 150 agents and consistently ranks as one of the top real estate firms in the state.

Expanded to Livian
In 2011, I founded Livian (formerly Hergenrother Realty Group) in order to expand the successful Adam Hergenrother Team concept beyond Vermont. After many iterations, a few capital injections, and a lot of failing forward, Livian has solidified a model that exemplifies its passion for leadership and leverage. By providing agents with exceptional centralized services (including administrative support, client care, marketing and lead generation), it allows agents to focus building relationships and helping clients transform their lives through buying, selling, and investing in real estate.

Built BlackRock Construction
My brother, Tom Hergenrother, and I founded BlackRock Construction in 2012. It has ranked on the Inc. 5000 list of the fastest growing companies for two years. As a successful developer of custom homes and luxury residences, as well as commercial, mixed-use, and senior care projects, BlackRock Construction is passionate about opportunities that create value in local communities.

Launched Coaching Organization
Never one for standing still, I decided to take my six-plus years of coaching, consulting, teaching, and exploration in the realm of spiritual growth, and formalize then into the Achieve Freedom Coaching in early 2016. Over time, that grew into the year-long, full-immersion coaching program, Project | U. Later, I also launched a podcast to help others achieve fulfillment by using business as a conduit for personal growth.

$1 Billion Organization
In 2019, Adam Hergenrother Companies became a $1 billion organization. Since its inception, it's been voted the best place to work in Vermont five times, Livian has been named the #2 real estate team in the nation and to the Inc. 5000 list, BlackRock Construction has appeared on the Inc. 5000 twice, and my first book (which I cowrote with my then Chief of Staff, Hallie Warner), The Founder & The Force Multiplier, has been a #1 best seller on Amazon. Though all these outlets, including the Hergenrother Foundation, my primary focus is on helping people transform their lives.

Fast forward and here we are years later
Business has proven to be a powerful conduit for my personal and spiritual growth. In 2023, I wrote my second book, The 200% Life, (again with Hallie Warner) to teach other high achievers how external and internal growth are deeply interconnected, and that by focusing on both, you can create a life of peace, joy, purpose, and fulfillment.

Now, I spend my time leading several companies...
...investing in and developing others, writing books, hosting podcasts, speaking, and training, so I can teach others how to use business as a conduit for their personal growth. I thrive on taking on physical challenges and, after racing 21 Ironman races, adventured into skinning and ski-mo races in the winter and gravel and mountain biking in the warmer months, with some running and strength training in between. I fuel my mind and spirit with forty minutes a day of meditation and spend as much time as possible outdoors with my family and friends.

All of this is simple, but not easy
Life is hard. Business building is hard. Parenting is hard. There are daily struggles to overcome in every realm of life. I believe it’s about finding the gift in all of life’s experiences and understanding that through discovering who you are – a spiritual being having a temporary physical experience – you have the power to unleash joy in everything you do.
