Time and time again it is proven to me, through the successful business owners that I coach, that business growth is no longer business as usual. So many business leaders are realizing that to get where they want to go and hit that next level of success, they need to let go of the status quo and move forward. Simply grinding away in your role or in your career hoping for more, will not lead to the results you want. There is a better way!
The reality is that business growth is simple. Business itself is just systems, processes, and numbers. The human element, which is who is building the business, is the real challenge. Therefore, once we realize that there are no business problems, just personal problems showing up in business, we finally understand the true impact of personal growth and development.
The first step to growing yourself and your business is a morning routine. There is no perfect time to wake up, nor is there one specific morning routine that works perfectly for everyone. However, the reality is that every single successful and fulfilled person has some sort of routine they abide by first thing in their day, whatever time their day begins. If you can find any amount of time to fill your mind, body, and soul before you go on with all the things the day brings to you, you will be better for yourself, your family, and your business.
So how do you start? It is simple really. First, find a time. When do you usually get up? Do you have a set time? (This means a time when you actually get up, not the time when your alarm first goes off before you hit snooze half a dozen times.) Now ask yourself, does waking up at that time provide you with enough time so you don’t feel rushed to get to work, or to whatever obligations you have for the day? If the answer is no, then begin by committing yourself to wake up at a specific time. However, start small! Maybe you start with actually getting right up when your alarm goes off (pro-tip – try putting your phone across the room so you have to get up to turn off the alarm.) If you already get up when you plan to, try waking up 15-minutes earlier each day. After a couple of weeks of success, you can keep challenging yourself to wake up 15-minutes earlier each week until you can have a full morning to work with.
Once you have a set rising time, you can begin making your routine. Maybe you meditate, maybe you exercise, maybe you journal. Maybe, you want to learn a language, have more time to read, to explore a new hobby. Try incorporating affirmations, prayer, or reading Your Future Self daily. Fill your morning with things that fill you up! Then rinse and repeat. Consistency over intensity wins every time!
The second step is to increase your self-leadership. In step one, you have already proven yourself capable of having the discipline to own your mornings, and you are ready for more! Self-leadership precedes leadership and leadership is truly a prerequisite for growth personally and professionally. Self-leadership encompasses strong time management, clear priorities, and choices that reflect those. It means giving focus and intention towards what is important and working on moving from subconscious actions and thought patterns to conscious ones. This work is easy, it’s just not easy to build the habits (again it is all about consistency!). It takes time and dedication and when one leads themselves at the highest level, all things grow to new levels.
The third step is to continually place yourself in front of challenges. Allow yourself to fail. Find hard things to go through, and create opportunities to break through your comfort zones and fears. One thing that I know to be true is that happy and fulfilled people are always more successful in business. Personal fulfillment and happiness do not come from business success or material things. It comes from inner growth, showing up for oneself at a high level, gaining self-trust and confidence by overcoming challenges. How often are you putting yourself in uncomfortable positions on purpose? How often are you challenging your mind or body at a high level? Most people, especially as they get older, find themselves in the safe zone more often. Those that are the happiest and most fulfilled don’t allow that type of personal complacency and their businesses explode because of it as well! Who doesn’t want to be in business with someone who is always growing, overcoming new challenges, and who is so darn happy and fulfilled? No one!
Spending time in these three areas every day will change how you feel and how you perform. Your business will continue to grow as long as you do. Plus, you will have so much more fun in the process!
The time and attention it takes to grow oneself often feels like it is taking away from the time we need to spend in or on our business, but that mindset is what is keeping you from making necessary changes. Throughout my years of growing businesses, through my own personal transformation, and in helping hundreds of others on their path to the same, I am confident that this is not the truth.
