#104 – The Worst “Best” Advice I Got Early in My Career

This week, we talk about the best and worst business advice that we’ve ever received. People are always willing to offer advice based on their experiences and successes, but how can you know what advice is right for you? When you get advice, it is worth asking the question — is there a better way to do it? Don’t take anything for granted and don’t wait for permission to run your business in a way that feels right for you. Hallie and I discuss how failing big and failing often can teach you so many lessons that you will never learn if you don’t act and take risks. We also dive into the intentions behind our actions and how you may be subconsciously setting yourself up for failure.

In this episode, you will learn about:

  • Fail often so that you can start learning from your mistakes.
  • When you love the work that you are doing, your efforts will begin to flow more harmoniously.

[0:57] What is the single worst advice that you have ever received about growing a business? Advice can turn bad when you don’t have enough information to make a properly informed decision in the first place.

[2:35] Working longer, harder, and faster does not guarantee that you’re going to be successful at anything you do.

[3:15] “Don’t ask your team to do anything that you aren’t willing to do yourself” is terrible advice for a team that has diverse strengths. Each player just needs to focus on what they are expected to contribute to the team.

[4:50] When I started my real estate career I was working for 12 hours a day seven days a week, and while I thought I liked it, I just didn’t know there was a better way to get work done.

[6:53] Work can be hard, and can also flow harmoniously and feel effortless as you lean into what you love. You don’t need permission to be who you are and do what you love.

[10:38] Best advice? Fail often so that you can grow. By failing often you create opportunities to survive and learn from your mistakes.

[13:46] The time you spend deliberating over your choices is often more stressful than just making a decision and taking action. Don’t waste too much time trying to figure out what to do next — just get going!

[16:21] Could bad advice for one person be good advice for someone else? If you look up to someone who is giving you bad advice, you may not be able to recognize their advice for what it is.

[19:11] The worst advice I ever received still taught me powerful lessons.

[21:35] I know I’ve offered my share of good and bad advice based on the level of understanding that I was currently at.

[22:24] Your intentions can change the actions that you’re taking for better or for worse. Don’t let unmet expectations and fears allow you to make less optimal choices in your life.
