#121 – Why & How to Practice Gratitude

Be grateful for what you have. That’s a phrase we hear a lot of, especially during the holidays. But we often don’t reflect on the reasons why it is so important to have a gratitude practice as a leader. This week, Hallie and I talk about why having a gratitude practice makes it much easier for you to do the real work on yourself. You’ll get a few easy (and free) practical ways to bring more gratitude into your life, and we explain why being grateful doesn’t mean inaction, but actually is the foundation to manifesting even more of what you want. We talk about what a gratitude practice looks like, how it can support you through adversity and challenges, and why it’s important.

[1:22] Gratitude starts with a clear sense of position on how you want to go about your day. Being a leader is about making quality decisions, and to be a quality decision-maker you need to have a clear sense of direction and purpose.

[3:02] How does gratitude show up in your life and how does a gratitude practice help to shift your thinking?

[5:55] This time of year is extra important to pause and reflect on what gratitude means to you. For Hallie, not only does it put her in a better state, but it makes her become a better human being.

[7:14] The more rooted you are in gratitude, the less you feel like you need things from the outside world to complete you or make you whole.

[10:09] Why wouldn’t you be grateful for something? The reason is that you are attached to something you love more.

[13:43] If you practice gratitude every day, it routes you in finding the lessons in life, and you’re not suffering through life nearly as much.

[15:08] Hallie talks about the power of both presence and gratitude.

[16:19] It doesn’t matter where you are, you just want to be grateful for the experience you are having. If the experience isn’t pleasant, then you can always accept the experience, surrender, and let go. That doesn’t mean you will stay stuck, it just means you can accept what is and change it from the highest level.

[17:05] Having gratitude makes it easier to acknowledge how much else we can give to others who may have even less than us.

[18:11] Being grateful doesn’t mean inaction.

[22:02] The three modes of spiritual growth: acceptance, joy, and enthusiasm.
