Our conversation this week is inspired by the Rumi quote, “Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today, I’m wise, so I’m changing myself.” Hallie and I break down what this quote means and how we can use it to expand our patience, self-awareness, and overall feeling of calm towards ourselves and others. We talk about why you shouldn’t wait for the conditions to be perfect before jumping into self-growth, and the two important frameworks that will help you fully experience all that life has to offer.

[9:56] Let’s stop being “clever” by trying to rearrange the world in a way we think we like. Let’s wake up and be wise to the way life works.
[10:13] What does it mean to actually change yourself?
[10:35] The framework for the two things going on in your life: you are enjoying the experience, or, if you’re not enjoying the experience, you are letting go of the part of you that is preventing you from enjoying the experience.
[14:53] We often condition ourselves to think that we need certain things to be happy, and if they go away then we won’t be okay.
[15:13] If you really want to go down this path and change yourself, you’ve got to be willing to allow any condition to come in and know that you can handle it.
[16:00] Hallie and I talk about feeling irritated, and how to sit with it in a way that doesn’t try to distract you from the deeper emotions. I share a time when I was irritated and tired from travel, and how I observed first rather than reacting.
[24:02] Be like a dog – just witness, living in the moment and being energetic.
[26:01] You can wake up and realize that as you go out there and interact with the world, you can allow it to purify you and change you to what life is supposed to be like.
[28:22] Start with the small irritating things, and work up from there.
[30:52] Most people want personal growth to happen when the conditions are right, but you’ve got to work on them at all times, including when things are challenging.
