EPISODE #004
Today we’re going to be talking about a four-letter word that begins with F — FEAR!
I see people spending a lot of time trying to get rid of fear, people who think that a better version of themself doesn’t have fear, but it doesn’t matter how much you accomplish or how far you come as a person. Fear doesn’t go away.
Fear played a critical role in our evolution, our fight or flight response helped us survive for thousands of years, but how does fear serve us in today’s world? How does fear serve us in the business world?
First, we need to understand the two different kinds of fear:
- PRIMAL FEAR – This is the fear passed down from our ancestors; the response that pumped us with the adrenaline we needed to outrun predators and hunt our food.
- PSYCHOLOGICAL FEAR – These days, you’re more likely to experience psychological fear. This is the fear of judgment, the fear of failure, the fear of rejection. The problem is that, unlike the tiger chasing us, these problems aren’t immediate. We experience the same physiological response, but instead of using it, it just builds up in our body as stress.
So your goal shouldn’t be getting rid of fear — it should be learning how to use it, how to make it your dance partner.
But that also means you have to recognize that the fear is separate from you. The fear is just something that shows up. Acknowledge it, offer it gratitude for trying to protect you, but don’t make the mistake of thinking that it is part of your being. This awareness is the first step to creating some space between you and the fear.
Fear can’t hold you back if you don’t relinquish the energy it needs to hold you back.
