EPISODE #005
Today I’m going to dissect an equation that every high achiever should be familiar with:
Thinking + Action = Results
I think all three of these things are required if you want to change your results long-term, but a lot of people make the mistake of thinking you HAVE to change your thinking first, which will help you change your actions, which will then change the results that you’re getting.
That definitely works, but that’s not the only way of approaching this. You can start by changing your actions, which changes your results, which then changes your way of thinking.
Think about starting a new workout routine, for example. You’re probably not going to get up on day one super excited to go hit the gym or go for a run. But if you do it consistently over time, eventually, you’re going to start looking forward to that workout and the way it makes you feel afterward.
I also want to address some common misconceptions people have around changing their results:
- Many people are under the impression that you can just make a big change in your life and then you’re done. But if you take a week off of working out, thus changing your actions, you might start to get a little lazy and reluctant to go back to the gym. As a result, your results will start to change again and you will start putting weight back on.
- You can’t just muscle your way through a problem with pure willpower. If you don’t put some supports in place, whether that’s stacking habits to make the change in action easier to accomplish or enlisting support from other people, you’re likely not going to be able to push through the big barrier that is your current way of thinking.
- Failure isn’t the end of the road. That doesn’t mean you weren’t able to complete the equation. Failure is possibly the best catalyst for changing your thinking if you can embrace failure as an opportunity to learn.
