EPISODE #011
If you’ve ever managed a team or led an organization, you’ve probably heard this question: “Why didn’t I get that promotion?”
Ouch. Those are words that no manager or leader wants to hear.
That one question makes it apparent there is a tidal wave of expectations and assumptions between the two of you, and if you’re like most leaders, this question immediately throws you on the defense. At the same time, if you’re a leader who strives to serve others, you probably feel guilty as well.
And therein lies the problem — if you haven’t worked through all the emotions this question stirs up first, you can’t possibly lead others through the experience. It’s like sitting next to someone on a massive roller coaster and trying to coach them through the experience. You can’t because you’re just trying to hold on for dear life, too.
I ran into this exact problem a few weeks ago, and I wanted to share it on today’s episode. The experience could have gone a dozen different ways, but by bringing mindfulness to the situation, it actually resulted in a win-win-win — a win for the employee, a win for me as the leader, and a win for the organization.
