EPISODE #042
The last few months have been challenging for a lot of businesses to say the least. Many businesses across different industries have found themselves playing defense to ensure that their businesses survive. Mine included.
But there came a point recently when I realized that if one of our companies didn’t start playing offense ASAP, we’d be stuck playing defense indefinitely, which is not how organizations grow and thrive.
I realize a lot of businesses are in full-on defensive mode right now (maybe yours as well), so I want to share how we handled it inside our organization in case it helps you. In this episode, I take you behind the scenes and share how we shifted from defense to offense. It started with this email that I sent to our team…
“the past two months have certainly been challenging on many fronts and I applaud you all for your efforts on rising to the occasion. while we are not out of this we are on our way.
the past 8 weeks we naturally fell into a rhythm of playing defense, which was needed. I am certainly not in everyone’s world or daily life so I don’t always see all that you’re doing but I do know that everyone is working hard. the perch that I am sitting from allows me to see just a bit further down the line, and from this view it’s clear that we need to start shaping our efforts and energy into offensive mode, big time. it’s time to thrive and not just survive. this will require a refocus of priorities and a concentrated effort to see things through. what I see is that our defensive moves are still being required because of our inability to move the ball forward. if we nail the offensive we give our defensive time to rest up.
I’d like all of us to come up with 3-5 items that are the most offensive moves that we can take as a company and then create a 30-day action plan around it and execute.”
So this week Hallie and I continue the conversation, talk about how to recognize if your team is playing offense or defense, and how to get the ball moving forward again.

[2:58] When we are in survival mode and acting to protect ourselves and our team it may seem like we are on the offense, but really it is more like defensive action. Everything you are executing on defensively is to survive.
[9:37] It is up to leaders to lead the team to play on the offense and to find out why they are in the defense. When the team gets clarity on this, everyone can move the ball forward and we can plan, strategize, and execute.
[14:36] Playing on the offense also means protecting your dollar, then figuring out where the best case to spend it is.
[20:06] Disruptions and unexpected things happen, but it’s up to you to find the next vertical that makes sense. You don’t necessarily always need to create something new, sometimes just improving on an existing model can yield big results.
