#050 – How Leaders Who Coach Create Winning Teams

When it comes to business coaches, most people tend to think a coach is someone outside of their organization.

(Think Tony Robbins, John Maxwell, etc.)

But really having a strong coach within the organization is crucial for success.

And if you’re the leader of your organization or team, that coach needs to be you!

So in this week’s Business Meets Spirituality conversation, we dive into what it really means to coach your team as a leader.

Plus, we lay out the exact steps to make sure you’re doing your job as a coach. We cover:

  • What it really looks like to be a strong and effective coach to your team
  • Some key lessons you can learn from great sports coaches
  • What it means to coach in the moment and how to do it organically
  • Why coaching is similar to a fortune cookie — yep… you read that right 😉

[1:05] Understand your people, and who it is you are coaching. Great coaches spend time to learn what makes their people tick, and what drives them to get out of bed each day with excitement and motivation. The more you understand what drives your people, the more you can align their work with their goals and give them tools to be successful.

[4:43] Learn to read things between the lines. As a coach, you have to be able to pick up on the energy in the room and coach from a holistic viewpoint. The more tuned in as a coach you get, the better you will be able to put your ego aside, have the difficult conversations, and even deal with potential problems that may arise before they actually do.

[8:42] Ask Questions. Asking the right questions helps the people you are coaching become more self-aware, and leads to better long-term results rather than a temporary fix. It also shows that you are leading from curiosity and not from just imposing your will.

[10:24] Hold Your People Accountable. You can set a great foundation and create an environment for success, but the other people still need to do the work. This is also a way to see who is there to run with you, and who just may not care enough to actually do the work.

[14:26] Coach in the Moment. Annual reviews and weekly meetings are great, but sometimes the moment calls for coaching right then and there. Your team also notices when you are open to feedback and learning and growing.

[18:43] When you sit with an emotion and let whatever comes up and out go, the fruit of the emotion shows up. This fruit can actually be a gift, and you can teach yourself to see feedback as an opportunity for change and radical conversations rather than something to be defensive or shrink from.

[20:52] Increase Your Leadership, and Encourage Your Team to Do the Same. Get coached yourself and never stop consuming books, podcasts, or reaching out to other coaches or mentors.

[23:54] Teach Your Team How To Coach Themselves. You will be creating leaders that are independent rather than feeling like they need you to answer every one of their questions.

[28:52] Know when your team members need a coach that isn’t you. The more great people your team can learn from, the more they are able to grow and in turn teach others around them.
