[1:30] If you are at a level five of leadership trying to coach someone at a level one, you may be missing exactly what it is that they need to learn and grow.

[1:47] By “green leadership,” we mean someone new. They are not just doing awesome as an individual contributor, but have chosen the path of succeeding and leading through people.

[4:42] When Adam decided he wanted to go deep in leadership, he dedicated time and space to learning about himself, his own behaviors, and leadership principles.

[4:53] A leader creates the best roster for where the company is, and where the company is going.

[6:25] A green leader has chosen the path of leadership but doesn’t always know what that exactly entails.

[6:48] Having experience of managing people or a team doesn’t always translate to being a great leader.

[10:53] A few examples of the traits and behaviors we see green leaders develop as they grow include:

  1. They are willing to have tough conversations without ego or a certain outcome.
  2. They have clarity and a clear vision surrounding their personal and professional life.
  3. They lead themselves first, without responding from just pure emotion, ego, or need for an outcome.
  4. They  no longer lead through title or power.

[15:22] One of two things will happen when you have a tough conversation with employees: they will either step up or step out. Great leaders recognize the importance of one of those happening rather than just letting things get stagnant.

[18:23] A large piece of green leadership is learning to lead yourself and manage your emotions. When you show up present in the moment, you show up differently rather than showing up with ego or emotions from an earlier conversation.

[20:46] A lot of people can prove to the world and themselves that they can lead, but the next step is really seeing that they can gain and retain talent that will succeed.

[21:36] Titles structure hierarchy, but they don’t structure influence.

[22:28] We have a process called Career Visioning, which is all about walking a candidate to see whether or not working at our company is in their best interest. This is a way to get everyone on the same page and to see if the visions are a match. If not, no hard feelings.
