There is a mountain of content out there for each and every one of us. Between social media channels, emails, the news, emerging apps, tools, and technology, there’s a lot of noise in our world. We are nearly constantly bombarded with new articles we “need” to read, new must-listen podcasts, conferences, webinars, new episodes to stream — all while our emails are piling up in multiple inboxes. It is easy to feel overwhelmed by this ceaseless influx of new information — some of it contradictory, and much of it ultimately useless to our businesses and our lives.
This week, Hallie and I talk about how to cut through the noise and get purposeful about the content you consume. Of course, it’s important in whatever industry you are in to pay attention and stay on top of the news, but not at the cost of your and your team’s performance in the moment. We talk about building purpose into your content choices by revisiting goals, staying centered and laser-focused, and how to say no to media that isn’t helping move you or your business forward.
In this episode, you will learn about:
- The price that leaders and their teams pay when the leader changes direction too frequently.
- Why it’s important to seek out news that offers you a fresh perspective, but also how to know when you’re caught in a web of contradictory information.
- How to stay centered with a full inbox and a constantly evolving list of priorities, goals, and information.

[3:49] Leaders can fall prey to confusing and contradictory messages which makes their own team feel confused and unsure about what it is they are supposed to do. This can also cause leaders to pay attention to things they don’t have to and spend time in one area where it could really benefit in another.
[5:05] Now that we are almost two months into the New Year, what have you slipped on from your New Year’s goals? It’s never too late to recenter and get back on track.
[7:19] You have to cut through the noise to know exactly where you are going, but also come up and take a look every now and then to see if you need to reorient or reframe your tactics.
[9:10] It’s important to not just live in an echo chamber, but to use your own inner growth to seek out differing perspectives and see what sticks. Sometimes you will find new information that may adjust your direction, or you will confirm that you are on the right path.
[11:48] Instead of informing us, the news is now just trying to startle us and keep our attention for views and ad money.
[15:15] Even subtle things can create clutter and pull us away from our goals. Book clubs and projects are great, but even take a look at your noble goals to see if you really need them or can streamline them.
[22:46] Drafting is so important because it gives you insights into what big companies are doing. Pay attention to what the big people are doing in their industry.
