#047 – What Do You Do When You Feel Like a Fraud?

Have you ever felt like a fraud, an imposter, or just like you don’t deserve to take credit for the success of things going right in your business? If so, let me tell you… you aren’t alone.

I talk to executives, leaders, and even employees all the time who say everything seems like it’s perfect on the outside. But on the inside, they are struggling with doubt about the value they are bringing to their organization.

When you start having success through people (whether you’re a business owner or you’re managing a team), feeling like a fraud or imposter actually happens a lot to people. And here’s the thing… you don’t want to run away from that feeling because it’s your next opportunity to grow as a leader!

So this week, we talk about what to do when you start feeling like a fraud or an imposter. We explore the common challenges and fears that come up when making the transition from working in the business tactically to a more strategic leadership role.

Plus, we discuss why you don’t need to have the loudest voice to be the best leader and the mental shift that needs to take place in order to reach the next level of leadership.

[3:05] It can be very hard and humbling when you have to shift from doing the work on your own to succeeding through other people. The very first step of transitioning to a mindset focused on the collective rather than the individual starts with the perspective that great employees also reflect great leadership.

[4:26] Executives that hire a great staff may also feel like it’s hard to let go, or that they aren’t as valuable to the company now. Or, if things are going really well, they may feel like it’s too easy and that they really are an imposter.

[6:33] It’s easier to let go of the outcome and trust others when you have trained them properly and set expectations on the system and process.

[9:49] Work on integrating the notion that you will succeed through other people, and you realize you don’t need to be there to do everything.

[16:09] Before you expand your business, solidify the right people first. It’s perfectly fine to have multiple companies, but you can’t be the one running each of them and responsible for all key decisions.

[19:45] The more you commit to your own growth, both in business and spirituality, the more you can pay attention to everything at the company, even the communication that isn’t overtly stated.

[24:41] Keeping a journal is a great way to get emotions out and see what’s really coming up, regarding the feeling of being a fraud or imposter.

[25:30] Your own self-growth becomes a gift for others and gives them clarity and vision.
