Vacation. It means different things to different people!
Sometimes it means seeing new sights, trying new foods, and gaining new experiences.
Others treat their vacations as an escape from their lives—a chance to be someone else; perhaps who they really want to be in their daily lives.
But if that is the case, let me ask you—what do you need to change in your daily life so you don’t feel that need to escape? Can you recreate that feeling that you get on vacation each day of your life?
And what about work? The week before vacation brings a certain focus and intensity where you give yourself permission to say no to certain things so you can prioritize what is most important.
Can you harness this pre-vacation productivity every week?
On this week’s episode, Hallie and I talk about:
- How to treat every week like you are going on a vacation.
- Why it’s important to plan a vacation, and ways to take one even if you are on a budget.
- How to build a life where vacations are about the experience, not an escape.
- How to set boundaries if you choose to work on a vacation!

[3:10] Notice your actions and your intensity the couple days before you take a vacation. What do you say yes and no to? This intensity can be something you create on days that aren’t just prior to a vacation.
[6:50] A cool vacation hack, if you can, is to set up your auto message to explain to people that unless it’s an emergency, they can reach you again after your return date. All other messages will be archived and deleted, instead of coming back to a mountain of emails to catch up to.
[7:35] Vacations can look different to everyone. For some, it can be a week away at the beach. For others, it can be just 30 minutes from their home discovering and trying something new. Be open to vacations of all different kinds and budgets, but just know that it’s important to take them.
[10:55] When you are aligned and excited about your life, vacations are less about escaping and more about enjoying the experience. Try to build as much passion as you can about your daily contributions in life, and a vacation can just be icing on the cake rather than something you need to feel alive.
[14:44] To work or not to work on vacation? There is no right or wrong. While some people prefer to be totally off the grid, it makes others happy just to check in. The important part is to set clear boundaries with your team and others. You can also experiment with different styles and see what type of vacationer you are — one that can be away from their phone for days at a time, or someone that can do it sparingly.
[24:44] In between vacations, you can build in the fun of a vacation by taking little breaks to try something new and be fully immersed in the present moment.
