#066 – Listener Question – “How Do I Cast the Vision?” Part 1

In this first episode of a two-part series, we talk about the difference between a vision and a goal or plan, and why you need to know the difference. As a leader, it’s essential to cast a vision and explain your vision to others in a way that they are on board – but oftentimes it’s much easier said than done. We share what exactly casting the vision means, the three things leaders must do to set the vision for themselves and their teams, and what to do when the world doesn’t seem to get it. Because sometimes they won’t, but that shouldn’t stop you!

In this episode, you will learn about:

  • What vision casting is, and why it’s important to have clarity and a grasp on your vision.
  • Why so many people have a vision but push it down or away because society doesn’t get it.
  • The difference between vision casting and goal setting.
  • How to get in touch with your vision to bring it from your mind to the “doing” world.

[1:21] A vision is the ability to think about or plan the future with imagination or wisdom. Most people think a vision is something tangible, but really it is first created in our minds; that then makes its way to the “doing” world.

[2:03] It is crucial to trust your vision and not be afraid of how big or small it seems, compared to the rest of society.

[7:40] Your vision should be in alignment with your nature, no matter how different or “weird” it is compared to others. For example, some people wake up at 5 a.m. and work for 10 hours a day for their vision, while others sleep until 10 a.m. and find a four-hour day better for their overall life plan.

[12:43] Steve Jobs was a very strong visionary, yet is a great example of how he learned to sell others on his dream. While it wasn’t about necessarily creating a phone, it was about a world where simplicity, cleanliness, and beauty was the aesthetic.

[17:04] Strong visionaries also can tend to have a lot of dissent and scrutiny. Jobs got ousted from his own company and had to learn how to adapt to a world where his vision was often questioned and doubted.

[18:11] You must be okay with your own nature and the vision that is unique to you. You also should take the time to really own it within yourself and the world, especially if it’s something you avoided or covered up for a long time.

[20:14] Practices like journaling are a great way to get things out and see your true nature. The more inner work you do, the more your vision starts to come out and you have clarity on how to live your vision. Chances are you are busy, but blocking off even just two hours every couple of weeks to sit down to write can have a big impact.

[31:13] When you get clear on your vision, you can start to shed the things in your life that aren’t going to contribute to or support it.
