There is a reason why up to 80% of people don’t make it past 30 days into their New Year’s resolutions. Listen – it’s not because they are lazy or don’t care but because of some basic elements of human nature and motivation. The thing is that you can use these to your advantage once you fully understand them. In this episode, Hallie and I talk about why we don’t make New Year’s resolutions to begin with and why we make life-long commitments instead. We discuss how to develop the emotional fitness to get you past giving up and how to build habits for life that reflect your true nature. In short, this episode will help you commit to being your best self every single day – including, New Year’s day and beyond.
In this episode, you will learn about:
- How we define resolutions vs. goals, and why most people fail at keeping their resolutions.
- If you don’t really want to put in the hard work, don’t pick it as your resolution!
- The benefits that come when you really get clear on the commitments you want to make for yourself and have the emotional fitness to see the challenges through.

[1:48] When we make a resolution, we are saying to ourselves that we are once and for all resolving an issue — usually they are lifelong habits or ongoing commitments that can’t be changed in one month.
[3:10] January is a great time to review big goals and break them down into bite-sized steps. We prefer to say New Year’s commitments rather than resolutions, as commitments are more about making the commitment to living in your true and authentic nature.
[4:59] About 80% of people fail to keep up their New Year’s Eve resolutions in the first 30 days. Most people create too many and feel overwhelmed, some don’t realize what it actually takes, and others just may not even want to do their resolution in the first place!
[6:00] A commitment is not designed to inspire the world, it will inspire you. Through seeing others stay true to their goals, it inspires us and shows us a model of what can happen when someone stays committed.
[9:02] Emotional fitness is knowing there will be a massive internal and external pull to get you off whatever your goal is in the first 30 days (and beyond). Your mind will tell you that it’s too hard, you are too busy, it’s not worth it, etc. The real winning comes in knowing that it will be a challenge, and mentally preparing for the moments where you feel like giving up.
[15:17] The commitments are far deeper than what most people see them as. They are about taking control of your life, and that’s why they’re so important.
[17:02] The best relationship you can ever have is with yourself, so let’s focus on that one because it matters the most!
[22:24] When you stay true to your commitments, you free up energy and space to live how nature designed you, and you gain more trust in yourself and ultimately the world around you.
