#070 – Close Your Loops: The Four D’s of Decision Making

As we enter 2021, it’s easy to want to jump into new endeavors while pushing old to-do list items off to the side. Old items can be as simple as a dentist appointment you’ve been putting off or an email to send. Or they can be something weighing on your mind like a hard conversation or big career change. This week we discuss the four Ds of decision making, and how to know if those open loops are something you should do now or delete off your list forever. Plus, we talk about why closing old loops before committing to new goals will give you the clarity and energy you need to execute more effectively in the New Year.

In this episode, you will learn about:

  • The four Ds of decision making that will help close the loop on the old things before we jump into the new.
  • Why we feel like 80–90% of things on our to-do list should be deleted.
  • More about the productivity to simplification process, and why starting with your closet may be the best idea.

[2:09] Hallie and I discuss the one word that summed up 2020 for us. For her, it was “growth” that ultimately led to beautiful clarity. For me, it’s all about surrendering. When we fully surrender, our nature matches the nature of the universe and we find ourselves more in a flow state and less in resistance.

[4:41] Before you go all-in on the new and shiny fun things, close out the old. Whether it’s the doctor’s appointment you need to make, the article you need to write, or the bills you need to pay, there are Four Ds in Decision Making that can help you clear up your time and energy.

[7:11] In order to gain something and benefit from something, you have to stay with it.

[8:58] We talk about the process of productivity and putting the time and work in, and then simplification. We have the arc in life and business where we learn to be productive, and the first step is really getting ahold of how we measure our time and structure our calendar. Then, we can simplify and narrow the focus on what we have become actually really good at.

[11:13] One of the best ways to start simplifying is in your closet. It is an easy way to see how much energy gets freed up when you “delete” and streamline things you don’t really need or use.

[17:27] Closing the loops will give you the space to see beyond where you are currently at and to free you up to swing to the next good idea or act on your intuition even more.

[19:58] Be aware of your habits and really reflect on if they are supporting you or taking you even further from your goals and highest self.

[21:47] We have to be willing to move through the dips and hard times of creating new habits in order to move forward. Then, you have built a model for creating larger habits in your life, which is really what New Year’s Commitments should be all about.
