#072 – Alcohol, Coffee & Food — To Enjoy Them Or Avoid Them

We talk a lot about “Needing nothing” and “enjoying everything” around here, and recently it came up in a conversation about small indulgences like a cup of coffee, a glass of wine, or even a nice hot bath. Are these things you should enjoy? Or forgo in the name of being disciplined, maximizing your productivity, and needing nothing? There’s no one size fits all answer here because each person is different, but there is a clear way to tell what’s the best decision for you.

In this episode, we walk you through exactly how to know if you should indulge in or refrain from enjoying certain things so you have clarity when you’re making your choices. Plus, I talk about the pull I had with my relationship with food and eating, and how the inward work made it possible to have less of an emotional charge. Don’t worry – we definitely won’t tell you not to dive into a sweet dessert, but we will show you how to do it in a way that rings true for you!

In this episode, you will learn about:

  • How to stop trying to fix your “un-okayness” from the outside, and start from within
  • The difference between loving a warm cup of coffee because it calls to you in the moment vs. feeling like you need it
  • How The Five Daily Questions is a great tool to get to know both yourself and your team on a deeper level

[:55] We use the Five Daily Questions to strengthen our relationship with staff, and communicate within our organization. This week we are using our Marketing Director Caitlin’s answers as a direct example of how we use the Five Daily Questions in our business.

[1:38] Caitlin is reframing her relationship with coffee, and we discuss how she is working to overcome the perceived need for caffeine. She has used this framework before and looks forward to applying it. We discuss needing vs. enjoying.

[5:22] There is nothing wrong with simple pleasures, but you want to get to the level where you don’t need outside things or circumstances to feel whole and complete on the side.

[7:08] We talk about how looking forward to something is a very common human trait, but it’s best if you can be open to the present moment. The mastery comes in feeling positive about the future but not attached for the outcome to go a certain way.

[12:55] It is common for high achievers to still feel upset and as though something is lacking even when they reach the next level.

[14:15] It shows a level of emotional maturity to reflect on what experiences you may be searching out to try and make you feel better on the inside. We want to take action in what is unfolding in the present moment rather than searching or grabbing for it, while still playing in the game of life.

[16:07] Let go of fighting reality and needing a certain outcome.

[17:14] The minute we need something outside to make us feel better inside, it just doesn’t work.

[19:05] There’s always another level of knowledge in business life and spirituality.

[22:36] I talk about the push and pull I had with my relationship with food and eating, and how the inward work made it possible to have less of an emotional charge. It feels like a breeze rather than a tornado, and while I may indulge here and there, I view food as a source of energy and a way to feel better.

[28:18] You can’t permanently fix yourself from outside sources.
