We’ve all had moments in our lives when we are overwhelmed by our mind’s chatter. Maybe you are trying to head off to sleep and your mind is going over everything you need to do the next day, or maybe you are distracted by worries during an otherwise low-key workday. These mind “explosions” are very rarely productive, so how do we turn them off?
This week, Hallie and I answer this listener question about how to quiet your mind’s chatter, and have fewer nights feeling like your head may explode with “to do’s.” We talk about the top three ways to quiet your mind, neutralize the energy, and enjoy the experience of being your authentic self — without all the background noise. We also discuss what real surrender looks like, and why it’s one of the hardest things to accomplish.
In this episode, you will learn about:
- Why your mind is loudest and most full of chatter at night.
- How Hallie and I proactively neutralize our mind’s energy.
- Why a mantra is key for getting out of the stories your mind is telling you and getting to the real core of being a spiritual being having a human experience.

[2:13] Usually it starts with the first explosion, where you have one thought that leads to another. Next thing you know, it’s 1:45 a.m. and you are cursing the fact you’re not only awake but losing crucial sleep for high performance tomorrow.
[4:00] Our mind chatters most at night because during the day we can distract ourselves. At night all the background noise comes to the surface.
[6:36] Hallie has a proactive system in place to manage things she can’t control. She finds it helpful to do a brain dump before she goes to bed, where she writes down all of her “to-do” items on a sheet. She also manages incoming things by dividing them over a seven-day span.
[10:10] The first step to clearing the mind is to neutralize the energy and the mind’s chatter.
[11:10] We talk about what a “samskara” is, and how it blocks our energy by creating a stored experience or conversation that forms a pattern in our brain.
[18:52] The second step is to choose a mantra. In transcendental meditation, they give it to you, but it can be anything. Mantras neutralize the chatter and transmute the energy instead of getting tangled up in it.
[29:54] You can’t solve the feeling of surrender without actually experiencing it. The human experience is about controlling everything, so to really understand who you are, you have to surrender.
[35:20] The ultimate surrender is not wanting to control the process and just work on the process itself.
[36:36] Practices like meditation and journaling are great to implement so you aren’t having to do a brain dump at 1:45 am.
