Do you know what your principles are? And if you do, are they written out somewhere for you to see every day? This week, we define what principles are, and why it’s important to write them out in a manifesto. Not only will this help you get clear on what really matters, but it will act as a North Star as you make decisions and help you decide where to spend your money, energy, and time. We talk about Ray Dalio’s principles and how to know other people we first must know ourselves, discuss what the point of having an argument really is for, and how we can align our principles with inspired action more every day.
In this episode, you will learn about:
- Why does everyone need to be clear on their principles and have them written out?
- What are Adam’s principles, and what is the meaning behind each one?
- Hallie’s principles may be different than Adam’s; both can lead to the same emotion or result — joy, freedom, and content.

[0:21] Principles and a manifesto are a way to orient your life and give clarity to your decisions and why you are making them. We discuss investor and entrepreneur Ray Dalio, who is extremely financially successful but has continued to live in a way that is aligned with his principles.
[4:55] We define principles and note why people would want to write them down and share them in a manifesto.
[8:11] Is there a difference between our principles in business and personal life? The outcome may be different, but our principles fall under one source.
[9:20]
- Building always beats talking.
- Don’t stop and ask for permission.
- Defend the builders and creators and give them the status they deserve.
- Give yourself permission to work on things that are harder than you think are reasonable.
- Take creative risks and try crazy ideas.
- Aim 10%, Take the Shot 90%.
- Do it this week instead of next week, today instead of tomorrow.
- Say no to the chorus of vetos.
[15:20] Meaningful work and relationships are the best rewards. The more we can let go of the outcome and the need to be right or perceived a certain way, the more we can see the fruit in every situation and experience joy. Own your outcome, and get a coach if you are able to.
[20:31] Why do people argue? To defend their ego. Instead, try going into meetings with an open mind and be ready to learn a new perspective.
[28:28] You can’t do everything or have everything and writing your manifesto will help determine what really is a priority according to your principles.
[28:58] Adam’s principals:
- Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. Decisions should be based on joy.
- Operate with an open heart.
- Life is about uncovering yourself.
- The amount of joy you feel for material things is a direct relation to the joy you feel inside.
- Need Nothing; Enjoy Everything.
- Be authentic and true to yourself.
- Ask deeper and bigger questions that will lead you to the truth.
- Life is the greatest teacher.
- There are no problems in life, only challenges.
- Learn to both work and play simultaneously.
- Don’t think of every event or situation as just a means to the end. You are the means.
- Head down, heart up.
