#094 – Consciousness at Work | Part 3 — Conscious Communication & Decision Making

This episode is Part 3 of our four-part Consciousness at Work audio series. If you missed Parts 1 and 2, we recommend you begin there. Click here to receive the series, in order, right to your inbox, with some bonus materials and resources.

In this section, we explore conscious communication and decision making. We give tactical examples of what conscious communication looks like at work, and why it should come from a neutral state. Hallie and I talk about the key components to conscious communication in the office, and also in the digital space. Then, we provide you with a five-step framework for making decisions that will help you stay grounded and neutral while making big tactical and strategic business moves. Remember, when you show up at work, you are there to contribute — you don’t need to get anything from anybody else. Communicating and leading from this place of awareness will bring you the clarity you need to grow yourself and your business.

In this episode, you will learn about:

  • You can have results and expectations of how you want something to go in life and business, but with awareness, you can relieve yourself of stressful attachments to those outcomes.
  • When vulnerability becomes a liability in business.
  • What do radical conversations really look like, and what they are not.

[2:35] Your ability to be spiritually conscious is directly related to your ability to handle an influx of energy. When we make strides towards growth in this arena, we can bring in a greater abundance of money, energy, and joy.

[6:04] Higher consciousness is actually more of a neutral state, where less bothers you and you are able to go throughout your day with greater ease. For most people, it sneaks up on them that they are feeling less stressed and less ruffled by things, and that is spiritual growth. The rewards may not seem huge in the beginning, but 10% less pain and suffering can free up a lot of space and energy.

[9:45] Consciousness, waking up, or some form of enlightenment just means you are no longer addicted to the mind and listening to your stories. You are not bought into a narrative that the mind is serving you, nor are you looking too much ahead to the future or behind the past.

[13:20] The basic level of consciousness is the point where you recognize this annoying “roommate” as Michael Singer refers to it. You are able to have a direct experience with life rather than the experience the mind is leading you to have.

[18:31] Consciousness is not a thing, it’s a removal. It’s taking away the narration that you are paying attention to and agreeing with. You can have results and expectations of how you want something to go in life and business, but the difference is, are you attached to those.

[21:46] We discuss how to have difficult conversations in business, and how to show up so that you are in a clear space and ready to make decisions. Taking a sacred pause allows the feelings and emotions to move past you and frees you up to respond from your highest intuition.

[25:03] We will still have the flat tire or the delayed flight, but conscious communication means you observe that these things aren’t ideal, but interact with them from the highest place you can rather than being too low or too high.

[32:01] Some ideas to get you in a clearer spot: pause, relax, breathe. A walk in nature does miracles. Also, a proactive method is some form of a gratitude journal. Before you walk into a meeting or arrive at work, a deep breath will also help ground you and clear your energy.

[34:48] Conscious communication is all about being centered in a space first before you become over fatigued or overwhelmed in decision making. We give an example of some leaders only making decisions from 10 a.m.‒2 p.m. throughout their day because that is what works best for them to be in a clear space.

[36:34] Radical conversations mean you are clear, vulnerable, neutral, concise, and open-minded. The only way you can have radical conversations is if you go into them not needing to be right.

[38:02] When does vulnerability become a liability in business? You can be vulnerable as to where you are now, but the strength comes from where you are going.

[39:14] Living authentically is not reacting to the mind but going to what the highest possible action can be in the moment. It doesn’t mean you say anything you want with no filter, because that is coming from the ego. Being authentic means you are being conscious and that you are not listening to a story and acting from it. Authenticity is seeing through the BS and then operating from an egoless and fearless space.

[40:47] Our Five Steps of a decision-making framework.

  1. Center yourself and get clarity.
  2. Determine the ideal long-term outcome you are looking for.
  3. Triangulate information.
  4. Being clear in communication.
  5. Refocus the team and execute.

[47:54] Great leaders are conscious of each email they send and interaction they have, knowing it can be grabbed and blown out of proportion.

[50:11] How you walk through the office matters. Center yourself and be present. Remember you are there to serve and contribute. There is a difference between being too passive or getting walked over and having the intention to serve.
