#100 – 100 Episodes, a Hike Up Kilimanjaro, and a Special Message About Moderation

It’s our 100th episode! First, thank you so much to all the listeners for tuning in all around the world. To celebrate, we kick off today’s episode with a very special guest, my seven-year-old son, Asher. He has a quick message for you about moderation and what it means to him. Then, I share the story of my 2014 journey to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. The intense physical and mental challenges of the climb to the top, along with the beautiful backdrop of Africa, was the perfect way to learn just how interconnected we are with nature, the power of managing your mindset, and how to laugh through the pain. There were so many lessons along the way. Taking on challenges is one of the best ways you can learn. Hallie and I also talk about how to relate these lessons to business and how we can know when we are in too deep, or when we need to just keep pushing.

In this episode, you will learn about:

  • Who you surround yourself with matters.
  • We are connected, and everything is interconnected. This applies to both business and spirituality.
  • Nature knows what it’s doing, even if our minds may not like or understand the outcome.

[5:43] I share what motivated me to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, and how it’s important to surround yourself with friends and people who are also doing big things. We all know that our time on this planet is limited, so live, learn, and play every day.

[6:02] Planning your vacations can help keep you focused on your “why,” and give you a goal.

[9:40] When something feels like it is going to challenge you and you will gain a lot from it, just sign up for it.

[14:31] The more you grow personally and consciously, the harder it is to find people at your level. The more you live with a growth mindset, the harder it is to be around people that have a fixed mindset.

[18:52] One of the biggest lessons I learned upon getting to the African village was seeing how much joy the community had with little to no material possessions.

[23:22] I begin the story about hiking up Mount Kilimanjaro. As you get up to 15,000 feet and beyond, you are dealing with intense weather and altitude changes. Many people become disoriented, confused, and don’t know when to turn back around. Much of it is also a mental challenge and also knowing that on the way down you are working with a lot less adrenaline than on the way up.

[33:06] This hike can be a metaphor for business in many ways. First, many times people fail or don’t move forward because they can’t see their own blind spots. They are tied to something and can’t pivot.

[34:51] As much as I was proud of myself for completing the climb up and down Mount Kilimanjaro, I had so much pride for my friends that finished the hike.

[38:18] I had two or three mantras that helped keep me grounded and focused. At some of the hardest moments, I also laughed, which is a tactic the Navy Seals also use. Do you know how to laugh at yourself sometimes?

[40:40] Spending time out in the Serengenti showed me just how interconnected everything is. Nature has an amazing way of creating an event or giving us a tool that is used by the whole community around it. We may not know why it’s happening or think it’s happening “to” us, but we just have to get out of the way and know that life is truly unfolding for us every day.

[46:29] Spirituality means there is something larger than you. When life gets really tough, that is our cue to pause and ask what life is trying to teach us.
