#106 – Living Your Rich Life Might be Closer Than You Think

This week, we were inspired by the words of author and podcaster Ramit Sethi to talk about what it really means to live a rich life. Ramit’s philosophy is that rich doesn’t necessarily refer to your financial situation, and while money can help us in life, it is important that we first get clear on what being rich even means to us as individuals. Hallie joins me as we talk about our versions of what it means to live a rich life, how we are able to put those things into practice now, how to become aligned with your partner’s vision of their rich life, and how you can start today. It can be as simple as a daily cup of coffee at your favorite cafe, having someone clean your house once a week, fresh flowers delivered to your door regularly, or ordering whatever you want off the menu regardless of the price. Budget for what brings you joy and fills you up, and eliminate whatever gets in your way.

In this episode, you will learn about:

  • What it means to live a rich life.
  • How you and your partner can become aligned in living your rich lives, even if your visions are different.
  • Oftentimes, living our rich life is closer than we think.

[2:35] We first talk about author and podcaster Ramit Sethi’s definition of being rich. It’s the simple things that bring you joy. It can be something you do daily or something you save up for and do as a big treat.

[3:00] There’s a difference between being obsessed with money and knowing you need money to pay for the “rich” things in life you want. That is why, in our organization, we break it down to 51% culture and 49% profit.

[4:04] After you become clear on what your rich life looks like, you can work with your partner to get in alignment. One tactical thing you and your partner can do is to budget your rich life together. If you have a different idea than your partner about what a rich life looks like, don’t dismiss them. Instead, think of ways that you can support their vision.

[6:30] Your version of a rich life is unique and doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s. If you are always comparing yourself to others, you are missing the whole point.

[6:41] Most people are happier when they live below their means, whatever that means for them and their unique situation.

[18:11] A lot of what people feel is true richness saves them time and energy. It enhances their experience. For example, not having to carry around your bags at an airport, having someone else cater your party, or hiring a house cleaner to free you up from chores.

[20:55] Once you understand what your rich life looks like, you can budget and usually do 85% of it right now.

[28:14] I give an example of my rich life being time in the morning. My morning routine is extremely important to both myself and my wife, and that is why we hired an au pair. It gives us time to set the day off right and freedom to live our own “rich” lives.

[31:58] Where have you been dismissive to yourself and your partner about things that you can afford now that are part of your rich life?
