This Summer, I celebrated my 40th trip around the sun. While that sounds like a long time to some – life always seems to go by in a flash. This week, I share the four main lessons I’ve learned from my four decades of life. Hallie and I discuss both how to accept the deck of cards you’ve been dealt in life each day, and also to take inspired action towards building a life of work, learning, fun, and play. We talk about the importance of self-inquiry, what it really means to live a limitless life, and what it really means to be selfish.
In this episode, you will learn about:
- What does it mean to live a limitless life?
- What is wisdom?
- Why is contribution even more important than money or accomplishments?

[2:49] While I don’t feel positive or negative about turning 40, I just wanted to celebrate that we are here and able to be in the moment.
[4:19] It’s not about the age that you are, it’s what the age prompts for you. Many people wait their whole lives to do self-inquiry, which is so important in setting the intention for how you want to live your life.
[4:40] How is your life different from the expectations that you had about it?
[6:08] When you live in a way that includes work, learning, and play every day, you feel less deprived and more joyous.
[14:20] What is the foundation that you live your life from? Is it gratitude? Fun? Adventure?
Are you choosing to fight what is happening in your life, or are you waking up excited for the possibility?
[24:50] What does a life with no limits look like, and is that really possible when we have responsibilities and a family?
[25:35] You can hear the opinions and interpretations of others, but it is up to you to really create a life and belief system that is uniquely yours. You shouldn’t get trapped in other people’s thinking. Follow people’s models of advice but if it’s not fitting you, change.
[32:03] Is it always bad to be selfish?
[34:08] It’s not about what you do, it’s about how you do it.
[36:11] The greatest gift you can give yourself is time for self-inquiry.
[37:14] The more you can work on yourself, the more you pull everyone else up.
[40:39] A wrap up of the four lessons:
- Birth, life, and death.
- No limits, no regrets.
- Learn to be selfish (in the right way).
- Money. What does it mean to you?
[43:21] Money will always own you if you are using it to feel better and to have a sense of self-worth. When you make it more about contribution than money or ego, you are more in the flow of life. If you are operating from an egoic place, you won’t be content.
