#115 – Are You a Spiritual Being Having a Temporary Physical Experience?

This week, I talk about the two fundamental questions that can drive how you think about life: are we all spiritual beings having a temporary physical experience, or are we physical beings experiencing consciousness? I talk about why your answer to this question matters and has everything to do with how you ride the waves of life and take in each day. I share why I believe we are spiritual beings and how that knowledge helps me play in life and focus on “being” as well as “doing.” We’ll also focus on pride vs. ego and how to view the different types of fear that arise when we acknowledge our experience coming to an end one day.

In this episode, you will learn about:

  • Why it helps to answer these questions for yourself
  • Even with us being spiritual beings having a physical experience, it doesn’t mean everything is going to go our way.
  • The difference between pride and ego

[0:45] We talk about the two questions that drive how we think about life — are we spiritual beings having a temporary physical experience, or are we physical beings experiencing life? Ever since I thought about the two and decided that I’m a spiritual being having a physical experience, it’s changed my orientation on how I go about life.

[3:12] When you view life with the lens that you are a spiritual being going through a physical experience, you get a deeper sense of appreciation for why we are here. It doesn’t mean the ups and downs of life don’t happen or that everything always goes exactly how you would like it, but life becomes a lot lighter and you aren’t as attached to the outcome.

[6:06] Our physical body takes different shapes, so we aren’t just one version of our body. But, whoever the “you” is that is experiencing life is always there.

[7:00] We can get so caught up in the “doing” that we forget to just be.

[8:37] The evolution of our souls happens through our physical experience.

[8:37] What do people really want? They want to feel good. But, the whole purpose is not to get what you want, it’s to feel the ups and downs so you can work on yourself, remove yourself from the experience causing you pain, and gain more clarity.

[13:24] If you are a spiritual being having a temporary physical experience, that can be your driving intention which gives you clarity to let things go.

[13:38] What about the fear of our temporary experience (fear of death)? There is a huge difference between psychological fear and primal fear.

[23:20] The clearer your intention is about your life, the clearer you will have direction for your life.

[26:17] Is there a difference between pride and ego? Spiritual growth can be painful. Letting go means letting go of any concept that you have of yourself, and that can rattle the ego and make us scared for what will be left once we’ve let go of our attachments.

[29:40] Everything you can do can become joyous, but it doesn’t mean that everything is easy and joyous. It means there is a level of ease and peace that comes with the knowledge that you are here just to enjoy and play with life.
