#170 – Does Discipline Really Equal Freedom?

Kenyan long-distance runner and champion Eliud Kipchoge once said that only the disciplined ones in life are free. That’s a powerful statement and one that not a lot of people are willing to sit and think about. This week, Hallie and I tackle the topic of how discipline really equals freedom, and how if you aren’t disciplined, you are a slave to your moods and emotions. We discuss how people think they want time to do whatever they feel like, but what they are really searching for is absolute peace and freedom from the ego’s nagging voice. We share how we build discipline in our lives, and why having total freedom can feel very chaotic and the opposite of free. Then, we give you a challenge to build more discipline (and ultimately freedom) in your life in just 30 days. Subscribe to Business Meets Spirituality: Want to be notified when each episode drops? If you are undisciplined, you are a slave to your moods and your passions.” [4:07] Absolute freedom is being able to walk around the world watching your ego instead of being pulled in every direction by it or responding to your mind. [4:51] Peace beyond understanding is having peace, even despite having a disturbed ego. That’s the absolute freedom people are looking for. [4:56] If you achieve that absolute freedom, then do you still want freedom? [6:25] In order to have inner freedom and physical freedom, you have to have discipline. [6:43] The more discipline you have, you get to indulge more in freedom. [8:09] We often feel the best in the physical world by doing those different things inwardly that take discipline and too much freedom can make someone feel undisciplined and chaotic. [11:20] If you have a very routine or a disciplined morning and take some time off to be undisciplined, in just a few hours you will again go back to being in the routine that sets you up for the most success. [12:00] When you have no structure, you are a slave to your mood and emotions. [12:51] What are the consequences and the flip side of having so much structure and discipline? [16:57] Discipline allows you to indulge in freedom, it’s not about walking around in a state of rigidness. [17:10] In order to be free, you need to have some discipline in your life to actually enjoy freedom on the physical side. [19:44] When you start becoming disciplined, you actually start saying no to a lot of things and get laser-focused on the things that actually matter. [25:19] Challenge: go take the next 30 days, and just add a few layers of planning and discipline to your routine. Hallie and I think you will end up finding more freedom. [32:23] When you take control of your life and stop listening to your mind all the time, it starts to put you in a virtuous circle which really gives you the sense of freedom you’re looking for.
