#086 – What Motivates Successful Leaders?

The driving force behind human action is motivation. Think about what truly motivates you. You may be motivated to lose weight, make more money, or gain more freedom. The thing is, if the motivation turns out to be a means to end, then it is not true motivation. The most impactful motivation comes from when you are living from your true and authentic self, free from ego, from which you can experience a much more powerful drive that is focused by your intentions in alignment with nature. From this place of authenticity, you can start living a bigger life than you ever thought possible.

But, it’s not easy to just let go of old drives that do not serve you or to surrender the mind’s stories we have long believed about ourselves. So this week, we talk about how to flow from a state of acceptance, joy, and enthusiasm, and why that will help us be even more productive and clear than just trying to muscle through with external motivation.

In this episode, you will learn about:

  • The three modalities that can help you live in alignment with your true purpose.
  • What true motivation is.
  • What happens when the motivation runs out? And why is the thought of becoming less motivated so terrifying?

[2:24] Motivation is like a warm bath. It feels good for a few minutes, and then you get out and it’s freezing. We discuss why we would even want to get rid of our motivation, when it helps us get success and external objects we need to survive and thrive in the outside “doing” world.

[4:37] Motivation is typically external, such as a job title, car, or even a personal event such as getting married or having children. If the motivation turns out to be a means to an end, it’s not true motivation. Instead, it comes from the ego and self-identification.

[6:20] Motivation can be defined in many ways. For the sake of this conversation, we define it as the general desire or willingness to do something, and the reason one has for acting in a certain way.

[7:02] We discuss the three modalities of knowing you are aligning your personality and true self with nature.

  1. Acceptance
  2. Joy
  3. Enthusiasm

[11:45] When you are in a state of joy, you are in what’s commonly referred to as the flow state, or the bliss state. This is where we fall into alignment with our purpose, and that leaks into enthusiasm, which gives us even more creativity and clarity.

[14:18] Joy and Enthusiasm are where we are in the present moment and have direct experience with life.

[16:17] It can be scary for us to try and let go of the stories in our minds and the need to feed the ego through motivation. People worry that if they aren’t motivated, everything will crumble and collapse, and that can be terrifying.

[17:37] When you are in joy and enthusiasm, it feels different than motivation although the three may look the same externally.

[24:36] The more we operate in our joy and enthusiasm, the more we can actually accomplish and flow from thing to thing. When we are controlled by the stories we tell ourselves, we spin our wheels trying to go after thing after thing that we think will make us happy and whole.

[26:42] Watch how many offers the mind tries to get you to take just so it can be in control. The mind cannot sustain itself without you paying attention to it.

[29:13] One example of motivation causing suffering is from Michael Phelps. Although he had great success as an athlete, his people-pleasing and expectations caused him great depression.

[32:47] Homework: Watch what actions you are taking and why you are taking them. Just explore. This will help start to show you what comes from motivation, and how much joy and enthusiasm you are really experiencing day-to-day.
