How to Make Changes in Your Life That Will Last

People want to change, and in my role as a leader and business coach, I see how much people want to change all the time. Because inside each of us there is a deep longing for authenticity – the ability to be 100% ourselves in all facets of our lives and have the work that we do be a total reflection of who we are at our core.

However, you may have heard me say this before – goals are out. The new goal is execution. Why? Sure, it’s great to want change and to set goals, but if you’re not activity taking the steps every day that you need to in order to change, then you’re definitely not growing. Growing means action – you can’t just wish for it. You actually have to do it. Humans are great at having goals and vision but not so great at actually carrying them out. 80% of New Year’s resolutions fail by the second week of February. That’s not surprising! Change is hard. You have to do the work. It’s one thing to say you know what to do and an entirely different thing to actually viscerally understand what to do because you’ve gotten the results. Until you’ve actually put in the time, effort, and done the work, you don’t really own that knowledge at your core.

So here’s the million dollar question: How do you force yourself to make a change? How do you make yourself grow when we naturally resit it?

The answer is simple. Immerse yourself in change.

One of the things I learned early on was that if I really wanted to change – as in transform myself into the leader who was capable of building and leading the company I was building – I had to be 100% in. I needed to immerse myself in leadership development training as much as possible and hold myself accountable more than any coach or mentor ever had. I signed up for almost every Tony Robbins event, I worked my way into any high-level mastermind I could, and I hired business coaches who I knew would help push me to the next level of my business and life. I traveled around the country for years and investing hundreds of thousands of dollars studying behavior, NLP techniques, and spent every Saturday studying psychology from some of the best practitioners in the world. Note, I said years. The type of change I was implementing in my life and business was not the type that would simply happen overnight.

It was with this in mind that I started reflecting on how I could support others in doing the deep work of creating lasting change. How could I truly help transform the lives of business leaders? Not just for a day or a week, but a lifetime? Ultimately, I knew I had to start a full-immersion training program for leaders that would provide them with the roadmap for lasting transformation and then hold them accountable for achieving it.

As I set out to design this ultimate leadership training, I thought about powerful live event trainings like Date With Destiny and Business Mastery, I reflected on some of the most impactful masterminds I’ve been privileged to be a part of, and I recalled the coaches and mentors who have had the biggest impact on me and my business. I combined it into one full-immersion leadership development training program in the hopes that – like everything we do – it would yield huge results and called it Project | U.

I knew the people who enrolled would experience significant growth because of my own leadership development experiences, but honestly, the velocity and rate of change I’ve seen since it began was startling. I’ve never led or been a part of a group of people who has experienced such massive changes in such a short amount of time. People have grown their businesses beyond what they thought feasible, bought investment properties to build financial wealth, have lost weight on the path to restoring health and maximizing their energy, rekindled struggling and failed relationships, connected more deeply with their spouses and kids, and have become stronger leaders for their teams, families and communities.

Here’s one participant Sven commenting on another participant’s Facebook post just yesterday:

In the coming weeks, I am going to share with you individual Project | U stories of transformation because I think it’s incredibly helpful to see what happens when regular people like you and me do the life-changing work of committing to change and then take purposeful steps every day to make it happen.

This week on the podcast, I talk with three Project | U participants – Sven Andersen, Jim Galligan, and Matt Bex – to take a deep dive into how they have actually started transforming their businesses and lives. We go behind the scenes of their worlds so you can see what it actually looks like when you commit to change at such a transformative level. Head on over to the podcast to listen in and hear what next-level transformation looks like in action.

Add the end of the day, lasting changes and transformation are about committing to growth at a massive level, taking the necessary action, being held extremely accountable, and immersing yourself in the change you seek. So as you enter into a new year and decade, think about not just what your goals are and how you’re going to accomplish them, but also how you’re going to be held accountable and how you will immerse yourself in that change day after day.
