#137 – Don’t Let Fear Be Your Stop Sign. Here’s How…

Where is fear stopping you in your life? This week, I share a story from a ski trip with my son Asher, where he learned a lesson on just how quickly fear can paralyze you and stop you from forward momentum. Hallie and I talk about our own fears and how to navigate through having fears without letting them run your life. Whether it’s speaking up in a meeting, seeing a snake, or making a big life change, fear can take over and keep our mind and body feeling tight and constricted. We talk about the two main ways you can dissolve fear and start to see them as separate things that won’t stop you from getting in your own way. Also, stay tuned until the end for some fun facts on emus!

[3:23] I share an example of how fear can paralyze you, where my son Asher went skiing in 3-degree weather, where it was freezing and windy. The elements got a little out of control, and going downhill gave him fear that he would slip and fall.

[8:09] Asher learned how easy it was to quickly let fear paralyze you, and how that could be dangerous in moments where it’s important to keep going. It was a great example to see how much fear can stop us.

[10:36] Fear can stop us physically, or in relationships, having a tough conversation, or in simple ways.

[12:36] Don’t let fear be a stop sign.

[14:05] Hallie and I share a few of our fears, and how we get through them.

[14:58] A lot of business leaders have the fear of failure or fear that they really aren’t good enough.

[25:40] It’s normal to have fear, but how long do you let it sit in your body? Do you let it run your life and do you make decisions based on it?

[28:40] Hallie talks about her fear of snakes.

[33:19] How can you start to bring your fears into your conscious awareness? One way is to neutralize the conversation around it, and another is to get behind it. We give an example around the conversation of death.

[33:17] There is absolute truth to motivating people from fear, but there can also be a better and more effective way.

[34:23] In what ways does fear show up in your self-identity and self-image? What if you let that go?

[37:41] Moving past your fear doesn’t mean you have to be reckless. You can still be afraid of it, just don’t let that fear run your life.

[40:55] Fun fact: Vermont is a great place to raise emus because they do really well with cold, crisp environments!
